Join Canadian fiddle champions Jane Cory & Kyle Burghout as they (and their band) celebrate the release of their new album, Many an Open Ground with a return to Celtic Folk. Called by the Sea and Get Reel will round out the evening at the Irish Cultural Society Calgary, Hickey’s Place.

The evening is in a concert format (attentive audience) in an authentic pub-style setting, with three acts and the ICS bar. Food is a maybe – check back. Cash and electronic payment options.

Canadian fiddle champions Jane Cory and Kyle Burghout join forces to create a unique sound characterized by lush twin fiddle harmonies, intricate arrangements, and heartfelt compositions. They have toured extensively across Canada, performing at high-profile festivals, competitions, intimate house concerts, and community dances. Jane & Kyle bring an infectious energy and warmth that captivates audiences.

Their musical partnership is a seamless fusion of talent, deeply rooted in the vibrant fiddling traditions of their upbringings—Jane in Manitoba and Kyle in the Ottawa Valley.

Jane & Kyle will be joined by Alanna Jenish and Tyson Chen.

  • Alanna (guitar and step dance) is widely sought after as both a lead and back up musician. She has toured professionally with groups such as The Fitzgeralds, The Scott Woods Band and the Great Canadian Fiddle Show.
  • Tyson (piano) has a music degree from Carleton University focusing on Celtic and jazz piano. He has performed with many award-winning Cape Breton fiddlers, including Ashley MacIsaac, Andrea Beaton, Dawn & Margie Beaton, and Chrissy Crowley.

Called by the Sea

Michael and Doug from called by the sea with instruments.Whether they’re singing a traditional song from the British Isles or a modern song that sounds like it could be trad, Called by the Sea brings life to their music through energetic vocals and engaging instrumentation.

Michael Pollock (mandolin, concertina, banjo, vocals) and Doug Baker (guitars, vocals) are skilled musicians who have been part of the Calgary music scene for many years. The duo combines a varied selection of fine songs with innovative arrangements to bring you toe-tapping entertainment.

 

Get Reel

Our jolly ship’s crew will explore a lively set of songs and fiddle tunes from the East Coast, Irish, Scottish, Folk, and other Celtic traditions. Blending a mix of harmonies into their songs, Get Reel is:

  • Doug Wagner (vocals, bodhran, guitar, and fiddle),
  • Greg Black (vocals, guitar, electric bass, and octave mandolin) and
  • Tony Hogan (vocals and percussion).

Over many years, Get Reel has performed in numerous venues around Alberta, including the Water Valley Celtic Festival, the Irish Cultural Society, Okotoks, and the High River. We are also the house band for Celtic Folk.

When the fog is just right, you can almost smell the ocean, see the shipwrecks, hear the crashing waves with “a tiny trace of fiddling in the distance far behind him.”

It is a concert format (attentive audience) in an authentic pub-style setting. It is not a pub night. The ICS provides the bar service. Please be responsible and reasonable while enjoying the performance so everyone else can enjoy their evening.

Hickey’s Place is downstairs at the Irish Cultural Society. Our apologies as the stairlift is not functioning and there is no wheelchair access. As a private venue, children are permitted. However, they should be old enough to focus on the performance or another non-disruptive activity and must be supervised by a parent at all times.

Doors open at 6:30 pm.

Due to the nature of running concerts, all ticket sales are final.
