SOLD OUT: Fresh off of our sold-out relaunch show, we’re excited to have the fantastic fiddlers, Jane and Kyle joining us for their western Canadian tour. After all we’re just off the highway, this side of the road as they pass through. Also joining us is a recently formed local trio, The Drowsie Maggies. Additionally, Get Reel will be back with a brand new set.
The evening is at Hickey’s Place in a concert format (attentive audience) in an authentic pub style setting, with three acts, and the ICS bar (cash or Stripe). We are looking at getting a few food options going for this one (stay tuned).
It will be another great show. Previous concerts have sold out, so don’t wait to get your tickets – you’ve been warned. Tickets via the Eventbrite website or the secure embedded checkout at the bottom of the page.
Jane and Kyle (Trio)
Canadian fiddle champions Jane Cory and Kyle Burghout have been performing for over a decade, and have played to audiences across Canada, the USA, and Europe. Each with many accolades to their credit—Jane a Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion, and Kyle a North American Irish Fiddle Champion—they join forces to create innovative arrangements filled with lush twin fiddle harmonies.
Both growing up in areas with rich fiddling traditions—Jane in Manitoba and Kyle in the Ottawa Valley—their shows feature a blend of the traditional tunes they grew up playing and contemporary tunes written by fiddlers from across Canada and beyond, including many compositions of their own.
Joining Kyle and Jane on this Western Canadian tour, is Alanna Jenish on guitar, piano, and step-dancing. Alanna is widely sought after as both a lead and back up musician. She has toured professionally with groups such as The Fitzgeralds, The Scott Woods Band and the Great Canadian Fiddle Show, and enjoys freelancing for numerous bands and solo artists.
The Drowsy Maggies
The Drowsy Maggies are a talented trio hailing from across the pond. Their performances feature upbeat and energetic traditional Irish tunes contrasting with the stripped-back acoustic versions of some of Ireland’s most beloved folk classics.
Fiddler Emilie Kirwan brings her West Clare (from Ballynacally in County Clare) playing style to the stage. Emilie studied at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick, where she received a MA in Irish Traditional Music Performance. Martin Hayes and Siobhan Peoples were two of her instructors. Emilie regularly performs, teaches, and hosts Irish music sessions in Calgary.
Multi-instrumentalist Nicola McLaughlin (button accordion, banjo, guitar, bodhran, whistle) learned traditional Irish music through the Coventry branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (in the UK). Nicola’s enthusiasm for Irish music brings a wonderful energy to traditional Irish music sessions across Calgary.
Thirdly, vocalist and guitar/bodhran player Ciara Lane hails from Dundalk, Co. Louth, and grew up in a house where trad music, the Dubliners, the Clancy Brothers, Christy Moore, and Mary Black were all household staples. She is self-taught on the guitar, and her vocal style is influenced by the softer tones of Christy Moore, Sinead O’Connor, and Dolores O’Riordan.
Get Reel
Hailing from the East Coast of De Winton and the North Shores of Calgary, our jolly ship’s crew will explore a lively set of songs and fiddle tunes from the East Coast, Irish, Scottish, Folk, and other Celtic traditions.
Get Reel is Doug Wagner (vocals, harmonies, bodhran, guitar, and fiddle) and Greg Black (vocals, harmonies, guitar, electric bass, and octave mandolin).
Over the last 15 years, Get Reel has performed in numerous venues around Alberta, including the Water Valley Celtic Festival, the Irish Cultural Society, Okotoks, and the High River Library. We are also the house band for Celtic Folk.
When the fog is just right, you can almost smell the ocean, see the shipwrecks, hear the crashing waves and a tiny trace of fiddling in the distance far behind him.
